RiRi Makeup Brand Breaks Cultural Boundaries

Over the years, many makeup brands have been criticized for their lack of diversity when it comes to shades of foundation. So, Rihanna clearly took matters into her own hands and created an oh - so - inclusive makeup brand herself.

Fenty Beauty launched on September 8th, 2017. Rihanna made her debut into the makeup industry with a bang. “I didn’t care how long it took, I was going to make sure that we covered most skin tones. Diversity and inclusivity are important to the brand. I hope that fans, makeup lovers, and makeup artists feel that,” Rihanna reported to a Harper's Bazaar journalist.

The lack of representation in the beauty industry can be exhausting, not being able to find the right shade, having to mix foundations. and spending too much money while doing so can drive you crazy. Finally we have something to celebrate, being considered as a priority can make a girl feel good. There are total of 40 shades of skin tones that dropped, including one for Albino toned skin. No other makeup brand can compete with that. Can you believe it took this long for someone to take lead on this project? That someone happened to be Rihanna.

Now that someone has actually pushed the curve for inclusivity within the beauty industry, people will start thinking about the ways that they too can change beauty standards. Lack of representation can result in a lack of sales. It takes courage to change cultural boundaries. Though Fenty is only one makeup brand, they have shifted the entire makeup industry in only one day, leaves us all guessing. What’s next? In the future we can hope to see more shades of foundation and other beauty products with more inspiration, inclusion, and consideration.
