Finding a Peace of Mind When Dealing with Mental Illness
Life is not easy. As high school teenagers, we often find ourselves believing that life is stressful. We have to deal with homework, extracurriculars such as clubs and sports, exams to study for, and obligations at home that they must commit to. Because of all these things, feeling overwhelmed can become familiar. But what happens when feeling overwhelmed, panicky, or sad becomes the new norm for even the smallest task a person has to do?
Keeping the mind healthy is vital for people to live and be able to perform the tasks they need to do such as everyday life activities. Mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety can wreak havoc on one’s mind. Depression and anxiety can cause health issues, such as heart disease and strokes, and can lower a person’s confidence and self-esteem. In addition, depression and anxiety can affect a person’s ability to learn or cause difficulty remembering certain tasks they used to be able to do.
If anyone has ever experienced episodes of anxious feelings for no apparent reasons, feelings of being overwhelmed, or constant feelings of sadness, it is okay to reach out to someone. The most important thing is to seek help and talk to someone. Talking to a teacher, a friend, a parent, or a therapist is the first step to overcoming mental illness. In addition to talking, people suffering from mental illness should try new things. Going out for a walk, learning something new, or socializing with friends can be activities that help sufferers of mental illness learn to cope with their illness and be able to find a balance.
Mental illness is not easy to live with. There are going to be more dark days than brighter days. But admitting you have a problem and reaching out for help brings you one step closer to overcoming mental illness. You are never alone in dealing with mental illness; there is always someone willing to listen.
