Hurricane Relief

Hurricane Maria has become the most disastrous Hurricane in United States history causing 3.4 million US citizens to undergo serious damage, according to Vox. Now we all know that this is a natural disaster but it has found its way into politics.

While it is easy to get caught up in all the drama this involves, politics is not what we need to focus on. Puerto Rico is an island and because of this all of their supplies are imported. Restrictions on imports can cause a serious problem that is a matter of life or death.

Puerto Rico could go up to six months without electricity. Just imagine if that was Cliffside Park. Second, this isn’t just a news article, this is real people living with this very real disaster. Water, food, and fuel are scarce on the island right now and it is not easy to enter Puerto Rico as the airports are damaged.

Right now our president, Donald Trump, might not be taking this as seriously as we have hoped but that doesn't mean we have to stop where he has. Puerto Rico is in fact a part of the United States though 50% of Americans didn’t know this, it is true. We are a democracy and throughout our entire history that is what we pride ourselves in.

We have to come together and help our people. Though you may think there is not much for you to do living in New Jersey, there is a ton. Right in our own school a group is taking donations for victims of Hurricane Maria and if you wish to do more online there are tons of donation sites that could help immensely. You could do more than tweet!

Here is where you can donate:

  • Cliffside Park High School

  • United for Puerto Rico

  • ConPRmetidos

  • American Red Cross

  • Global Giving

  • Salvation Army

  • Americares
