10 Tips to Choosing the Right College for You

After two and a half months of school, the first marking period has officially ended. Soon everyone will be getting their report cards and will have to determine how they can either improve or maintain their grades. Although report card grades are important, seniors should also be thinking about their college applications. It’s November and the college application season has already begun. Based on your grades from this marking period, the grades on your transcript, and your SAT/ACT scores, you need to start deciding what college is a good fit for you.

Here are some tips to keep in mind as you are applying to colleges:

1. What do you want to major in?

You don’t have to have the answer right now, but you should figure out your academic interests. If you know exactly what you want to major in, you can choose a school that offers your major. If you don’t know what you want to do, apply to colleges undecided and explore different areas of academics your freshman year to help you find your major.

2. Do you meet the requirements of the school?

Some schools have a minimum requirement of courses, SAT scores, and grades that you need in order to apply. Do not be discouraged if you do meet these requirements. Colleges holistically review applications, so you are more than test scores. Remember you are more than just a number.

3. Big or Small?

You need to decide whether you want a college that has a smaller student population or a larger student population.

4. Home or Away?

You need to decide whether attending a college near home or farther away will be best for you.

5. Is it affordable?

College tuition is very expensive. Make sure the schools you are applying to are affordable and offer a lot of financial aid.

6. Is the college a good fit for you?

Think about your ideal college. How do the colleges on your list compare?

7. Are you a good fit for the college?

Think about your past achievements, whether academic or not. What do you have to offer to the college?

8. Are you keeping track of the deadlines?

Make sure to research your college's application deadline. Some schools have earlier deadlines than others.

9. Are you applying for scholarships?

Remember, college is expensive. You do not want to be in a lot of debt. Start searching for scholarships and applying to them as soon as possible.

10. Enjoy senior year!

This isn’t exactly a tip for college but I think it’s equally important to know. Senior year is your last year of high school . Make sure to participate in senior events and enjoy every moment of it.

Good luck and no matter what destination lies ahead, know that you will be happy and you will do great things in your life!
