What To Expect from Phil Murphy
With November 7th behind us, the Chris Christie era in New Jersey is over. Now New Jersey has a new face to look forward to and that face is Phil Murphy. Hailing from Massachusetts and the democratic party Phil Murphy looks to place New Jersey back on the right track.
Before he was a politician, Phil Murphy worked at Goldman Sachs for twenty three years where he accumulated a net worth of about 50 million dollars. In 2006 he announced his retirement from the company and decided to seek a career in politics. He first started as the finance chairman for the Democratic National Committee.
In 2009 president Barack Obama appointed Murphy as the U.S ambassador to Germany. He served as the ambassador until 2013 when he announced he was stepping down the from position. When he got back to the states Murphy founded two organizations in New Jersey. The first being New Start New Jersey which acted as a non profit policy think tank that held multiple events throughout New Jersey. Phil Murphy then founded New Way for New Jersey which was a political organization that encouraged Democrats to sign petitions that criticized Chris Christie.
Phil Murphy managed to earn 55.6 percent of the votes while Republican Kim Guadagno could only muster 42.3 percent of the votes. Now that he is governor, there are many things that citizens of New Jersey can expect. One is the future legalization of marijuana in the state. Throughout his campaign Phil Murphy has made it clear that this will be on his agenda. Phil Murphy also plans to push for more funding to go into our public infrastructure. Roads such as route 80 have been kept in poor condition for the last couple of years, but Murphy plans to get route 80 and many other roads in New Jersey repaved. Another objective that Phil Murphy looks to accomplish will affect many high school students in the future. That is his plan to get community colleges in New Jersey such as BCC to be completely free. This will allow students that choose to study at a community college to graduate debt free.
At the end of the day, Phil Murphy is a politician after all and trusting every word that comes out of a politician's mouth especially during their campaign is not one of the wisest things a person can do. But, with loads of time ahead of him citizens of New Jersey can be at least sure he will follow through with at least one of his goals.
