Bouncers for the Bathroom
As we all know, the school bathrooms now require a school ID to enter. Though many students are confused by this and have expressed annoyance, there is logical reasoning for it. So I decided to talk to the man behind all of this change, Mr. Pinto, and get some answers.
I asked Mr. Pinto what the initial reasoning was behind locking the doors. The obvious reason resulted from the vandalism that occurred last year in the boys bathroom which cost the school a lot of money, as did updating the girls’ bathroom. This year, the bathroom has been a haven for vandalism and a place where vaping and slap boxing occur. In addition, Mr.Pinto wants students to use their IDs not only to keep track of who is using the bathroom at what time but to teach students the importance of carrying an ID with them daily. When the time comes to have a job or to attend university, an ID will be essential.
While these are reasonable answers as to why the bathrooms should be locked, I asked into why the girls are also being punished for what seems to be an issue with male students. Mr. Pinto says that although vandalism that occured in the girls bathroom was not as extreme as the boys, vandalism is vandalism and it is not acceptable. Though this may sound harsh, when looking at the factors this makes sense.
Remember, nobody can deny you the right to use the bathroom. If you do not have your ID, Mr. Pinto said himself that you can write down your ID number for the teacher who is on hall duty. However, if you’d like to avoid the hassle, keep your ID on you at all times.
