The Beauty of Givenchy
The renowned designer Hubert De Givenchy passed away March 10, 2018. Hubert will always be remembered for his work with actress Audrey Hepburn and many other actresses of the time for films like Breakfast at Tiffany's, Charade, and Sabrina.
Not only was he a costume designer but Hubert De Givenchy was the founder and owner of Givenchy. Givenchy has been a household name since the early 1950s. As a young man he had several apprenticeships with the likes of Elsa Schiaparelli and Lucien Lelong. Once he started the house of givenchy, he became known for his Parisian Silhouette and later started “Givenchy Gentleman” in 1965.
In 1995, he stepped down as the head from the fashion house. It was Givenchy who once said, “All a woman needs to be chic is a raincoat, two suits, a pair of trousers and a cashmere sweater”. Givenchy was a man who catered to the woman's need for fashion. He was determined to give women in the postwar era more options by creating couture tops and bottoms that could be worn however the woman wanted to wear it. The idea for a two-piece ball gown wasn’t around at the time. He said, “I feel that I am offering my client the pleasure of feeling herself a bit of a creator of her own style”.
Givenchy paved the way for new bright designers to come after him like John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Julien Macdonald, and Riccardo Tisci. Without the innovative mind of the great Givenchy, one could wonder where the fashion industry would be today. Givenchy has thrived in both ready to wear and haute couture ever since. Some would call him the “creator of personality”. Givenchy was truly an amazing designer and innovator for more than half a century. He will be missed.
