Get Ready to go to Xanadu
This May, CPHS’s Drama club will be transporting audiences back to the year 1980 in Xanadu. A parody of its movie counterpart, the musical version of Xanadu is centered around Cleo, who as leader of the muses (daughters of Zeus) is destined to be granted Xanadu, a gift so
grand that no one truly knows what it is. She goes to earth with her 8 older sisters via a mural and becomes bent on inspiring distressed artist Sonny Malone, the person who originally painted the mural.
In order to do so, she disguises herself as mortal Kira and attempts to help Sonny complete his dream; opening up the first roller disco. Cleo is not the only one on a task. Her eldest sister Melpomene, angry with having her title as leader of the muses stripped away, plots with the help of fellow sister Calliope to curse the couple by making them fall in love, an act prohibited between muses and mortals and punishable by eternal damnation. In all, Xanadu is a story of love, jealousy, and the creation of the first roller disco.
Starring in the play will be senior Isabella Urdaneta and freshman Maya Havoc as Kira and junior Elusive Grajales and freshmen Alex Rodriguez as Sonny. The rest of the cast is composed of talented people who will also help in bringing this 1980s classic to life on the stage. In addition to the amazing acting/singing skills this musical will offer, the cast spent weeks learning how to roller skate and will be rocking the disco come opening night.
Xanadu: The Musical will be playing May 3, 4, and 5. Tickets are going on sale for 5 dollars. There is also a 3 dollar matinee on Friday, May 4th at 3 p.m. Students come out and support the CPHS Drama club and be a part of a defining era. Who knows? You might even like to dance at the disco.
