Speaker Steps Down
Maybe you don't know who Paul Ryan is or why his stepping down is such a big deal, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important. On October 29, 2015, Paul Ryan was elected to replace John Boehner as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives following upon his retirement. This means that Paul Ryan has presided over the House of Representatives since then.
Though there has been chatter for months prior about Ryan’s resignation of Paul Ryan, he finally told colleagues that he will not run for reelection at House Republicans’ weekly gathering and that he will complete his term.
Under the Trump presidency, including Ryan, twenty officials have left or been fired from the Trump administration already. Paul Ryan is one of the most powerful people in the country but sources say, “He feels like he’s running a daycare center in Washington”, per Politico. For Ryan’s colleagues, it is understandable that Ryan decided to leave the administration. Since the beginning of Trump's presidency, the administration had already set forward a hefty agenda that has yet to calm down.
Though Ryan did support Trump, he proclaimed that if it were up to him Republicans should steer clear of immigration. As social media shows, Trump has still yet to take this advice. One of the biggest contributors to Trump's presidency is immigration anxiety from angry chants like “build the wall” to the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Paul Ryan is very open about his views on pro-immigration in which is in stark contrast to Trump. Paul Ryan had a hefty agenda that will soon come to an end, but looking at all the evidence, staying has become an impossible gamble. So it makes sense why he is ready to turn off this game and say goodbye.
