Ten Things I Learned in High School
It is almost June which means the ending of the school year. At this point, I am sure everyone, including myself, is ready for summer vacation. Although summer is on the horizon, so is my high school graduation. In short, high school has been an emotional rollercoaster, ranging from fun times and happy moments, to sad times and inspiring moments. Ultimately, high school has allowed me the time to grow and figure out who I am. In my final article for the Cliffside Courier, I want to reflect on the ten things I learned throughout my years at CPHS.
The list is as follows:
1. Be yourself. I know I sound like a parent when I say this, and you probably have heard this your whole life, but trust me when I say that everyone struggles to fit in, which involves changing who you are for the sake of being someone you’re not. Don’t do that. Be proud of who you are because you are unique and perfect in your own right.
2. Find your people. This is pretty self-explanatory but important to mention. Finding people who more or less are interested in the same things you are may result in some great friendships and fun experiences.
3. Join clubs and do activities you are interested in. There are a lot of opportunities to explore your interests throughout high school. Make sure to find what you are passionate about by testing out what the school has to offer.
4. Take classes you are actually interested in. When choosing course electives, be sure to choose the classes that fit your interests and passions.
5. Stay away from drama. Don’t get involved with drama and, if you do, try not to get into any physical fights or vulgar verbal arguments. Try to talk it out or report an issue to a teacher, guidance counselor, or the principal. You do not want to get into trouble over something stupid.
6. Do something you have never done before. Whether it’s performing in the talent show or volunteering, try something new and different. I didn’t really pay attention to this lesson until the middle of my senior year and I wish had more time to try things.
7. Always think positively. This lesson may seem simple but there are going to be many times throughout your high school career where you are going to feel overwhelmed (*cough* college admissions process *cough*) and sad. Try to stay positive and remember that everything will work out.
8. Make a difference in your school community. Whether you help create a new club or become more involved in improving your school community - this is home, so make an impact.
9. Start believing in your dreams. If you have already started obeying by this lesson, keep on believing. If you have been struggling, I am here to remind you to start believing in those dreams again. Never give up on something you have yet to achieve.
10. Embrace the future. Four years go by so fast. The next chapters of your life will happen soon but don’t be afraid of what is to come.
Well, I think that is everything I can share with you from my experiences and the experiences of those close to me. There might be more lessons I am missing but that is for you to learn as you continue or complete your high school career. To the class of 2018, congratulations and good luck! To the classes of 2019, 2020, 2021, have a great summer and good luck with the rest of your high school careers!
