Fashion Forward in NYC
During September New York City hosts New York Fashion Week(NYFW), NYFW is the place where our favorite designers showcase their latest & greatest and if you’re lucky you’ll be invited. Many participate in the development of the NYFW experience. There are producers, coordinators, researchers, designers and specialists buzzing around to create the ultimate experience. Lets not forget the hundreds of journalists buzzing around that can make or break your career.
I thought this only happened in the movies until I started paying attention to the politics behind the curtain. Fashion Week for fashion lovers is like the NFL draft, designers work all year to express themselves and show the world what they can do. Then the designers send their products down the runway to showcase their talents. After that they go through the emotional process of the anticipation of having buyers waiting bakstage to buy their designs to put in their stores, magazines, or to just wear. THAT is the draft. Fashion week is probably one of the most exciting / mind boggling moments in a fashion designer or creative directors life.
On that note, some of the best shows I have seen this Fashion week were CUSHNIE, Pyre Moss, Chromat, Kith, and Di$count Universe. These where the best shows based off of creativity, craftsmanship, and the diversity of models on the runway.
CUSHNIE had a beautiful selection of silk and satin gowns. The show also featured eclectic colors one of my personal favorites being a neon colored tight slip dress. Kith on the other hand is a streetwear brand. The show featured original designs and a very diverse cast of models. They even had collaborations with Versace, Tommy Hilfiger, and Converse that were really dope. Pyre Moss, a “ready to wear” collection, was based on challenging societal norms. His show featured a lot of statement pieces that anyone could use in their closet.
Chromat was another one of my favorite shows because not only were the models culturally diverse but the models where of all different shapes and sizes. Inclusion is so important when it comes to representation no matter the platform. On top of that the clothes where psychedelic and the show even featured models soaked in water, a great concept. We stan.
Lastly, we have the most interesting show which was Di$count Universe. Imagine the jiggiest rockstars you can think of. The colors, the energy, the hair, it was dramatically perfect. Throughout all of the shows I experienced in the past couple of days these were the most compelling. If you want to have a look for yourself just click these links….
