New Tunes to Check Out
Billie Eilish is finally releasing her long-awaited album! The 17 year old is known for her hit songs such as “Ocean Eyes” and “Bellyache.” Her EP “Don’t smile at me” has been on the Billboard Top 200 for over 18 months. Now, she has a new album coming called “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” The single from this album is called “Bury a friend” and it’s great!
“Bury a Friend” is different than songs on Don’t Smile At Me. On first listen, one may be turned off to it especially if you don’t know her music. However, on repeated listens, it grows on you. This song is darker than anything she’s released in the past. The song has a eerie feel to it that sticks with you, unlike anything currently being played on the radio.
During the song, Eilish talks about death and where we go afterwards. She also talks about being her own worst enemy. This song inspired her current album. “When we made ‘Bury a Friend,’ the whole album clicked in my head,” Billie explains, “I immediately knew what it was going to be about, what the visuals were going to be, and everything in terms of how I wanted it to be perceived. It inspired what the album is about. ‘bury a friend’ is literally from the perspective of the monster under my bed. If you put yourself in that mindset, what is this creature doing or feeling?”
“I also confess that I’m this monster, because I’m my own worst enemy. I might be the monster under your bed too,” she confesses. “Bury A Friend” may have simple lyrics but the meaning it explores is one that is very unique and complex. Not many songs on the radio explore themes of death or self doubt. These are very interesting concepts that I hope Eilish explores on the upcoming album.
There have been 3 other songs released from “When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” They are “You Should See Me in a Crown”, “Wish You Were Gay”, and “When the Party’s Over”. On “You Should See...”, Eilish expands on the dark mood. “Wish You Were Gay” turns to a lighter sound. However, the lyrics are about her heartbreak over a guy she used to date. It sounds like something that would be on her last EP. “When The Party’s Over” is my favorite out of all of them. It’s a beautiful ballad with depressing lyrics in which he talks about a relationship that she no longer wants to be in. She wants to focus on other things that aren’t him. Eilish shows off her wonderful singing throughout the song by keeping it mostly acapella.
All the songs so far released are great! If you like to try nerw music I think you should try Billie Eilish. I can’t wait for “When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” and other future projects!
