The Cohen Testimony
Michael Cohen has gotten his share of media attention in recent weeks in light of his controversial testimony against President Trump. Recognized as the former lawyer and so-called “fixer” of President Trump, Michael Cohen’s testimony brought dozens of accusations to light along with valuable insight regarding Trump’s alleged spending and negotiations.
On Wednesday, February 27, Michael Cohen testified publicly before Congress and the House Oversight and Reform Committee to discuss his personal and professional relationship with President Trump. During his much-anticipated testimony, Cohen revealed that President Trump had been involved in a number of conspiracies that included hush money paid to Stormy Daniels, an adult film star who had claimed to have an affair with President Trump. Cohen’s testimony came in response to his recent prison sentence of three years and five months for financial crimes and for misleading Congress officials.
Some of the most pivotal moments of Michael Cohen’s testimony had to do with an anti-secrecy agency called WikiLeaks, who planned to publicize hacked Democratic National Committee emails. Cohen asserted that Trump was aware of the agency’s plans. In addition to this, Cohen eluded to possible criminal charges that President Trump may face that have not yet received media attention. Such allegations led many GOP lawmakers to scrutinize Cohen’s motivations and credibility.
Once a distinguished lawyer, Cohen’s fall from grace has been difficult, as demonstrated by his emotional apology for his misdeeds in December of 2018. Cohen continued to express his remorse during his six-hour, sworn testimony before the House Oversight Committee. During his testimony, Michael Cohen was repeatedly battered with questions that cast doubt upon his claims. Another one of Trump’s associates, Paul Manafort, is currently facing seven years of imprisonment after being charged with nearly sixteen crimes just this week.
In recent weeks, Cohen has faced a substantial amount of backlash regarding his testimony after certain inconsistencies have surfaced. Cohen has valiantly attempted to clarify his claims after he was criticized for his broad explanations about what he had been involved in while working for President Trump. Republicans have since continued to discredit a majority of the claims made by Michael Cohen. In the meantime, lawmakers are still working to determine what steps are to be taken in Cohen’s case.
