Mueller Investigation
The Mueller Investigation has been a huge topic in politics since 2017. This investigation has lead to indictments of many notable people that worked with President Trump both in the past and present. This investigation has lead to 5 prison sentences, 199 criminal charges, and 37 guilty pleas. It’s recently come back into the news because of the final report from this investigation.
Attorney General William Barr gave a summary of this investigation to Congress. Some highlights from this summary are:
“The Special Counsel did not find that the Trump campaign, or anyone associated with it, conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in these efforts, despite multiple offers from Russian-affiliated individuals to assist the Trump campaign,”
“The Special Counsel ... did not draw a conclusion - one way or the other – as to whether the examined conduct constituted obstruction. Instead, for each of the relevant actions investigated, the report sets out evidence on both sides of the question and leaves unresolved what the Special Counsel views as “difficult issues” of law and fact concerning whether the President's actions and intent could be viewed as obstruction. The Special Counsel states that “while this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.”
This has caused many Democrats and some Republicans to want the full Mueller Report released without redactions. Barr said in a letter to the heads of the House Judiciary and the Senate "Our progress is such that I anticipate we will be in a position to release the report by mid-April, if not sooner," "Although the president would have the right to assert privilege over certain parts of the report, he has stated publicly that he intends to defer to me and, accordingly, there are no plans to submit the report to the White House for a privilege review,"
Democrats have been trying to get a subpoena to get the full Mueller Report without any redactions from the House Judiciary. On April 1st, Jerry Nadler, the House Judiciary Chairman, said he would authorize a subpoena on that following Wednesday. It was scheduled to be after the deadline Democrats gave Barr to release the full report with evidence to Congress. William Barr testified on April 9th and 10th about the Mueller Report. Some highlights from this include:
Barr claiming the government spied on the Trump campaign but did not provide evidence
Insight on why Mueller did not reach on decision on whether President Trump did or did not obstruct justice
Barr is willing to work with Congress on the redaction issue
