Ms. Matesic Adds Depth to the Art Department
As a freshman, it’s easy to feel apprehensive as I approach a new chapter in my life. The grounds of Cliffside High School can be confusing and overwhelming. New faces seem to appear around every corner; along with new assignments and stresses. Starting a new grade is nerve-wracking and frightening. Now, imagine beginning a new job...High school worries seem trivial now, right? For most people, starting a new job goes hand-in-hand with anxiety. Not for Miss Matesic, who is also a newcomer to Cliffside High School. She said that although she has natural nerves, she is eager and excited about the new school year.
Prior to working as an art teacher, Miss Matesic was a three-sport athlete in high school. She ran cross-country, played basketball, and threw for her track team. In addition, Miss Matesic always seemed to find herself in her high school’s art room - drawn to art and its history. When entering William Paterson University, Miss Matesic had an undeclared major. Following a discussion with her former art teacher, she decided to pursue a double major, one being a Bachelor's Degree in Art. She became an art teacher because of her passion and interest in the arts. Previous to her current position, Miss Matesic worked as an art teacher to younger children. Although she misses the students she used to work with, she is eager to begin working with a higher grade level. “When you teach younger children, they need a lot more help and guidance. Older students are able to do more on their own,” she said.
Miss Matesic is enthusiastic about having her older students do more complex projects. She believes art should always be taught in school because it helps to foster creativity. It helps bring about new inventions, products, and technology. Miss Matesic’s teaching style is hands-on; she motivates her students to learn by connecting her lessons to her student’s personal lives.
Miss Matesic is fond of CPHS. “Both the students and teachers are welcoming. Everyone’s very helpful. It’s nice to be close to home.” Being a newcomer myself, I asked her if she had any advice for me. She told me to learn how to get around the building as soon as possible.
Miss Matesic is confident that this school year will be a fantastic one. I wish Miss Matesic good luck in her first year at Cliffside Park High School, although I am confident she won’t need it! Below are some samples of her art.
