CPHS Bowling

Winter sports season has arrived, and with sports like track, basketball, and wrestling getting all the press, it’s time we take a look at a less-talked about, but equally interesting sport - bowling.

As with any other sport, the bowling team has many returning as well as outgoing players. The captains of this year’s bowling team are seniors, Juliette Morel and Anthony Major. While the girls bowling team has seen many new players this year, you can also expect to see returning players, Aavinash Daniel Moran and Emily Morel this season.

Unlike many other sports that are much more physically demanding than bowling, bowling is a sport that can last you a lifetime. Ms. Woodley, the coach of the bowling team stated, “Bowling is a wonderful sport because it is something you can do with a team or on your own for nearly your whole life. This is a sport that encourages you to focus on both the physicality of the game and the mentality of each shot. There are numerous "buzzer" shots throughout the game that test your nerve.”

Being that bowling sees many players who are new the sport, Coach Woodley places an emphasis on form and technique by simulating game situations at practice. Practices often take place at the high school and at Bowler City in Hackensack. New players start by learning the positions and motions of the game, then moving to more advanced techniques like aiming for strike shots and spare alignment. This is only half the task, as the team frequently watches videos to improve their forms and technique, applying the skills that they review at practice.

Coach Woodley has high hopes for this season, happy to report that the boys team is off to a particularly great start, beginning this season with a win! On December 10th, the bowling team faced Pascack Hills, and both the boys and girls teams performed well. Finta Ludy’s score of 170 in his first ever varsity match helped to set the tone for a successful start to the season. Boys captain, Tony Major, had a strong showing and Avi Rampersad broke 200 twice that night, leading the team to their first victory of the season. Great job and good luck to the Cliffside Park Bowling Team!
