New Year Plans
Happy New Year! It is now the year 2020. You’ve probably already given some thought about how you are going to improve in the new year. If not, here are a few simple New Year’s resolutions that you can try out.
1. Make smart food choices.
Be mindful of what you eat. Eat more fruits and vegetables and limit consumption of fatty foods and sugary drinks, like soda and juice. Instead, try out healthy snacks such as carrot and celery sticks with hummus or yogurt.
2. Exercise more.
Pick an exercise that you like and do it for 30 minutes a day. You can do so with family or friends. Exercising can greatly improve your health and your mood.
3. Read more.
Frequent reading will increase your knowledge and improve your reading and writing skills. You can visit your local library to check out a new book to read. Reading for pleasure comes with many benefits, including relaxation and development of empathy, so take the time to experiment and find out what you like!
4. Start saving!
Whether you work or receive an allowance, it always helps to save your money or create a budget. In doing so, you can save up for a special treat for yourself or someone important to you. You can also consider opening up a savings account. Since college is just around the corner for many of us, a college fund is the perfect way to save and plan for your future.
5. Protect your passwords.
Cyber security is very important today, so be sure to take the right steps in creating secure passwords to protect your accounts. Be sure to keep track of your passwords so that you don’t forget them!
6. Take the time to gain career experience and knowledge.
Begin giving some thought as to what you would like to pursue after high school. If you have a career in mind, ask adults in your field of interest about what they do for a living and the steps they took to get there. Remember, the most important thing to keep in mind when picking a career is to make sure that it is something that you are passionate about.
7. Practice time management skills
As high school students, our time management skills are often in need of work. Between homework, studying and extracurriculars, it can be difficult to get things done on time. Create a schedule for yourself to separate study time from play time. Be sure to stick to your schedule for the best results.
8. Go to sleep early and wake up early.
In doing so, your body’s internal clock will get used to a certain schedule, and you will be better prepared and more energized for school the next day.
9. Eat a healthy breakfast.
Ditch sugary cereals and opt for more protein-rich choices. Options like eggs, oatmeal, fruits, and yogurt are nutritious and will give you more energy to get through the day.
10. Be organized.
Every few months or so, take some time out of your week to organize your room. Donate or get rid of anything you no longer use.
These tips and tricks are sure to have you feeling new and improved in the new year!
