The Truth Behind the Succession of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

On January 8th, 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Henry and Meghan Markle, announced their departure from the British royal family through an Instagram post. To some, this withdrawal seemed like a shock, but to the majority of people, it came as no surprise.

To understand the origin of the couple’s plans for succession, we must look back to when the couple was first engaged in 2017. Meghan Markle’s involvement in the royal family was already a shock to many, being that she is a mixed-race American, two qualities that had been practically unheard of in the royal family’s past. Due to her differences, many began to scrutinize their relationship and her every move.

As the years went by, the distance seemed to grow between her and the royal family. Markle was often insulted whether it be her expensive taste in fashion or even her weight. Much gossip has surrounded the retired actress since the beginning of her relationship with Prince Harry and her welcome into the royal family. In October of 2019, Markle had to sue a British tabloid for spreading misinformation about her. This came after non-stop attacks from the paper.

Meghan’s online presence can be seen throughout the media. She has not been shy about expressing her feelings regarding the criticism that she has received. When asked by an NBC interviewer about the pros and cons of being a royal, she openly commented on the emotional effects that the copious amount of negativity she’s received have had on her. Markle stated, “Not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes”. The Duchess even went as far as thanking the interviewer for acknowledging her feelings.

The negative press that Markle has received justifies the couple’s withdrawal from the British royal family. In order for the couple and their son to grow, they decided that they must step away from the spotlight to give them the freedom to live free of negativity.

The couple plans to reside between North America and the United Kingdom. The couple’s exit from the public eye will allow them to focus entirely on their non-profit organization, Sussex Royal. The Duke and Duchess' succession from the royal family may have come as a shock to some, but it is clearly the best option for the couple to blossom as a family.
