Super Tuesday
Super Tuesday took place on March 3rd, and the results are finally in! Joe Biden won the majority of the states, being Maine, Massachusetts, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Minnesota. Joe Biden had 628 delegates in total. Bernie came in second place, winning the states of California, Utah, Colorado, and Vermont. California was the biggest prize of the night, with Sanders winning the state by a hair. Bernie won over 545 delegates. Elizabeth Warren came in third place with 45 delegates, Michael Bloomberg came in fourth with 23 delegates, and Tulsi Gabbard came in fifth with 2 delegates. To many, Super Tuesday may not be significant, but Super Tuesday gives us an early look at who the Democratic nominee for president may be. To win the candidacy, the Democrat running needs 1,991 delegates. Super Tuesday narrows down which candidates will go face to face to become the Democratic candidate.
Super Tuesday was started by Democrats to try to fix their wrongs from the previous election. In 1984, Ronald Regan defeated the then Democratic candidate, Walter Mondale, by a landslide. To fix this, Democrats in the South decided to move their elections to March. Even after all this, the results were not in favor of the Democrats since many believed that the Democratic candidate, Michael Dukakis, was too liberal for Southern Democrats. Now, Super Tuesday takes place throughout the country, as every state wants their say on who the Democratic candidate should be.
Before Super Tuesday, many Democratic candidates decided to drop out to support Joe Biden. This includes: Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg, and Tom Steyer. After the results from Super Tuesday, Elizabeth Warren decided to drop out of the presidential race. She has remained undecided on who she plans to support in the upcoming race. Many on social media have asked her to support Bernie Sanders since they have supported one another in the past, and many of their ideals are practically identical. Michael Bloomberg also dropped out of the race after finishing in fourth place. He backed Joe Biden shortly after dropping out.
