Boys’ Varsity Tennis Season

Carla Paz

The boys’ varsity tennis season has commenced! CPHS’s Boys Varsity Tennis Team has begun the season with much excitement! I had the opportunity to talk to Mr. Capizzi, the team’s coach, about what he thinks makes a good leader and his expectations for the season.

Who is the team captain?

We do not have a captain this year. We have a lot of seniors on the team. They have rotated the duties of captain for each match we have had this season.

Who are your returning star players?

Our returning star players are Rene Lobato, Aavinaash Rampersad, Ata Erdal, Fintan Ludy, and Joshua Pashalian.

What makes a good leader for your team?

A good leader is someone who leads by example. Good leaders can recognize the moments when they must be selfless, and can show the team how to support each other every day.

What is the best thing about tennis and/or coaching it?

Tennis is a great sport that helps its players build mental toughness. Most of the time, you are out on the court by yourself. You need to be comfortable and mentally strong in these situations. I love coaching tennis because it allows me to see students outside the classroom, in a more natural environment. On the courts, I can help them with something they are passionate about. However, in school, I am always helping students learn something that I am passionate about.

Where do you expect the team to rank this season?

This season I would expect us to be the number two team in our league. We have a number of returning players from last season. I am hopeful to build upon the success we had in the past.

What are you and the team working on in practice?

Once the season starts, we have matches almost every day. On the few days of the week that we practice, we work on drills to improve our play. We also play a few games to lighten the mood in between matches.

What expectations do you have for your players?

All players are expected to work together, support one another, and have good, clean competition each day. I also expect players to be on time and to show up for practices and matches. Most of all, players must be responsible and committed to the members of our team (and the coaches.)

What do you want your players to take away from the season?

I want all players to improve as both athletes and individuals as the season progresses. Most importantly, I want the team to have fun with their teammates, respect the sport we play, and always be a solid competitor when they take the court.

Support the boys’ tennis team this season by going to their games and cheering them on! Good luck to the tennis team!
