CP Wrestling Season in Review

Everest Šarić

Our wrestling program has captured the interest of many, with over thirty athletes participating this season. Similar to football, Cliffside Park High School’s wrestling program has joined up with Ridgefield High School. This collaboration has proven to be beneficial for both towns.

The team has many new members and is relatively young; currently, there are only four seniors on the team. Even though there are not any official captains, some athletes that have stepped up as team leaders are John Viton, Kevin Chica, and Kevin Berberian. They have helped to assist newer wrestlers and to foster a collaborative team environment.

How does the addition of many new wrestlers affect the team? According to the head coach, Mr. O’Hanlon, “Having a young team changes the dynamic of practice.” To help new wrestlers, practice consists of more teaching and instruction than usual. This allows coaches to experience the growth of the athletes and be beside them during their first achievements. The coaches overall are very excited to be introducing the sport to new athletes. They look forward to preparing wrestlers for the future years.

COVID has negatively affected this season just as it affected their last. There have been constant interruptions which makes continuity difficult. The coaches are doing everything they can to make sure their kids are staying as healthy and safe as possible. Even with all the challenges that have come with the season, the team has had nothing but a positive and encouraging attitude.

Mr. O’Hanlon would personally like to thank all the coaching staff for all their hard work and the extra hours they put in to help train and mentor these athletes. On behalf of the Cliffside Park Courier, I would like to wish them good luck for the rest of their season. Go Raiders!
