How Kamala Harris Will Potentially Make History (And How She Already Has)
Once a strong former critic of the current Democratic presidential nominee, Senator Kamala Harris of California was announced as Joe Biden’s vice presidential running mate on August 11th, 2020. If the Democrats are able to achieve this electoral victory, Kamala Harris will be making strides for minority women across America. If Biden wins the 2020 presidential election, Kamala Harris will make a name for herself as the first and only female vice president of mixed race in American history.
Following Democrat Geraldine Ferraro in 1984 and Republican Sarah Palin in 2008, Kamala Harris is only the third woman who has attempted to secure such a distinguished position in the United States government. However, Harris is the first woman of both Black and Indian descent to run for the position of vice president under a major political party, making her an important figure in both the black community and for minorities in the United States. Harris’ position as vice president would offer minorities the representation that they so often lack in the government.
Kamala Harris plans to focus on key issues such as securing medicare for all, tackling climate change, strengthening gun laws, and more. If Joe Biden is able to come up victorious this November, the future of elections in our country may be altered forever.
