Iranian Women Fight Back

Julianna Oriente

There is a crisis in Iran involving women's rights and conflict of religion and government.

On September 16, 2022, an Iranian woman named Mahsa Amini was allegedly killed by Iranian officers. Three days earlier, on September 13th, she was arrested for wearing her hijab incorrectly.

According to Iranian law, when a woman does not wear her hijab correctly or does not wear it, they are faced with ten days to

two months of imprisonment. While imprisoned, women face harsh treatment and brutality. Iran's prison system treats women worse than imprisoned men. These women are faced with horrible conditions, as they are subject to violence and unsanitary cells. Unfortunately, Iranian women do not have any rights to protect them from the horrible treatment and gender issues they face everyday.

What are women in Iran and around the world doing to show their support? There have been large numbers of people, both men and women, coming together to show their support by protesting against the government. In Iran, many women show their support by removing their hijab in public and cutting their hair. By cutting their visible hair, they show to the government that they are with Mahsa and will do anything to support other women.

A week after Amini’s murder made

headlines in the United States, up to 2,000 protesters in New York gathered to show their support and mourn

the loss of Mahsa Amini. Women all over the world show their support by simply posting online or sharing Mahsa’s story, as well as the stories of other Iraiain woman. The fight for justice is not over for women in Iran. They need support from other people around the world. Here are ways to help:

  1. Donate to trusted human rights organizations.

  2. Follow activist accounts on social media to keep updated.

  3. Share stories of these women if they cannot.
