Is Being Scared Good For You?

Everest Saric

During the month of October, leading up to Halloween, there are many scary events and experiences that you can attend, from a classic horror movie to Fright Fest. But is being scared good for you?

It has been proven that being scared can have many health benefits. While being scared, the stress response in your brain begins, causing you to have an adrenaline rush. During an adrenaline rush, oxygen floods your muscles, providing you with more strength and stamina under stress.

Fear is programmed in your nervous system and gives you the survival instincts you need to keep yourself safe from danger. Fear can only be unhealthy when it makes people over-think and act more cautiously than needed and prevents them from doing things that they would otherwise enjoy. Being scared in an environment like a maze or movie is good because you understand that the environment is safe and meant for your entertainment. Living life without the fear of being scared can actually help someone live their life to the fullest. Without living with phobias, like being scared of flying and heights, you can participate in more experiences and get more enjoyment out of your life.

Fear can also be motivating and helpful when making big life decisions, and it can push you to do something outside of your comfort zone. Making scary decisions can have greater outcomes making one feel more confident and enthusiastic with their life. So fear, in general, can actually be very beneficial towards one's mental and physical health.
