Mac and Cheese Lawsuit

Written by: Hissen Hassen

Amanda Ramirez, a woman from South Florida, is suing Kraft for five million dollars. Her reasoning: it takes too long to make mac and cheese. On the packaging of the box, it claims that it takes three and a half minutes to make Velveeta Shells & Cheese. Ramirez claims that it takes longer than the advertised time to prepare. As a result, she is suing Velveeta for false advertising. Are her actions justified?

I believe her actions are unjustified. It is common knowledge that when the box says that Velveeta Shells need three and a half minutes to prepare, the

instructions are referring to time in the microwave. In fact, within the instructions on the back of the Velveeta Shells box, it says to put the bowl in the microwave for 3.5 minutes. This is an appropriate amount of time to prepare this dish.

These days, when companies upset or offend someone, they quickly speak out and apologize to avoid losing business. However, the woman’s claims were so ridiculous, that even the company that makes the shells (Kraft Heins) spoke out. They were confident that the woman was being absurd: “We are aware of this frivolous lawsuit and will strongly defend against the allegations in the complaint.” (Kraft Heinz Foods Company spokesperson.) Many other microwavable meals also have a specific amount of time to be put in a microwave. Depending on the type of microwave you have, it may take a longer or shorter amount of time to prepare a dish.

I believe this woman is just looking for an excuse to get money somehow, which is completely unethical. She is blatantly wrong for her actions, and I am confident her lawsuit will not get anywhere in a court of law.
