Q&A with CPHS Girls’ Tennis Coach, Dr. Meier
As the school year begins, it is time for the girls' tennis team to begin. The girls' tennis coach, Dr. Meier, provided insight into CPHS's tennis team.
Who are your captains?
A: Our captains are Rubi Orellana and Ximena Cruz.
What makes a good leader for your team?
A: Someone who leads by example is what makes a good leader. Leaders do what they are supposed to do. Regardless of winning or losing, leaders are always gracious; leaders shake their opponent's hand to show sportsmanship.
What is the best thing about your sport and coaching it?
A: The best thing about coaching tennis is meeting the kids and creating lifelong friendships. Tennis is truly a timeless sport. As time goes on, you only get better at it.
What makes your sport unique?
A: What makes tennis so unique is that it is a game that requires you to think. A person has to be able to hit the tennis ball into the correct box on the court. Not only does it test how strong you are physically, but also how strong you are mentally. Some matches can go on for hours. Singles or doubles matches, both are very challenging.
Where will the team rank this season?
A: We will hopefully rank right in the middle of our league. Regardless, I am still very proud as a coach.
What are you and the team working on in practice?
A: The most challenging part of tennis is serving. A player has to be able to throw the ball and aim it precisely. It must hit the box opposite where they stand. Serves can take months or even years of constant practice. That is what we focus on improving.
What expectations do you have for your players?
A: The expectation is for everyone to give it their all and improve. Tennis is about being honest due to not having any referees. Good sportsmanship is vital, whether you win or lose.
What do you want your players to take away from the season?
A: I want all the players to have more self-confidence in themselves. Regardless of winning, my players should remember that they did their best on the tennis court.
A big thank you to Coach Meier for his time. We wish the tennis team luck! Go Raiders!!!
