Senate Runoff Elections in Georgia
With Democratic president-elect Joe Biden on his way toward taking office after much political turmoil, the Democrats and Republicans have clashed once again over control of the Senate. On Wednesday, January 6th, Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock both won Senate runoff elections in Georgia, giving Democrats control of the Senate. This development could shift the tide of our nation as Democratic control of both legislative and executive branches would allow them to push their agendas and policies more easily. The final outcome depends on Georgia’s Senate election, which is currently projected to be a win for Georgia. The Democratic party has recently been gaining more support from Georgia due to minority voters as well as young voters. Support from the black middle class in Georgia over the years is a strong indicator of a favorable outcome for the Democrats.
Update: The two Senate seats in Georgia have officially gone to Democrat nominees, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossof. This is a historic moment for the state of Georgia, which had been previously dominated by the Republican Party for years. Both of the elected Senators are in favor of providing $2,000 stimulus checks to citizens in desperate need of government assistance, which drew in many supporters. Warnock and Ossof's victories mean that the Senate will be leaning in favor of the Democrats, meaning a 50-50 split in the Senate, which gives Democrats control of the chamber since Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will also have the opportunity to cast potentially tie-breaking votes.
However, those in opposition to the recent election results are not happy with the outcomes and death threats have been made against Senator-elect Raphael Warnock. This is just one of the many threats that have been made against Democratic candidates and politicians since the 2020 elections. The Democratic victories in Georgia, within the Senate, and in the White House will likely increase political tensions in the country.
