Senior Year in a Word

Gianni Perez with the help of the senior class

The Cliffside Park Courier sent the senior class a poll, asking them to describe their final year in one word. The answers were varied, but all had the same idea: this year was unique.

The most used word was "hectic."

Senior year is always hectic, whether it’s due to countless college applications, the ending of the high school experience, or the challenging courses. However, due to the pandemic, it was even more stressful than an ordinary senior year. Seniors had to deal with virtual learning, canceled events, and a changing schedule. Many said it was difficult to find consistency in both personal and school life.

The following words were most common.

"Bittersweet"

The year was bittersweet for many. As previously mentioned, the ending of the high school experience can be difficult to accept. It's exciting to embrace your adult life and all the new possibilities that come with it. However, this also means leaving behind your high school self and taking on new responsibilities.

Some thought the year was bittersweet because of the lack of normalcy. The seniors did not receive a typical senior year. COVID-19 caused numerous changes that made the year different for everybody, especially the seniors. Senior year comes with numerous highly anticipated events. Some of these events were not able to be enjoyed due to the pandemic.

The senior year was a bittersweet one—a whirlwind of excitement and sadness.

"Interesting"

Interesting is an appropriate word for this year. Everyone was forced to adjust to the "new normal" brought about by the pandemic. This year was interesting because students were able to experience new courses, receive their drivers' licenses, and be introduced into the adult world! Due to the pandemic, these experiences and others were even more interesting. With new regulations and rules, seniors had to reacquaint themselves with the school and adjust to their last year.

"Stressful"

It's not an unknown fact that senior year is the most stressful time of high school; the added stress of this year didn't help. Turning 18 brings a lot of responsibility, as many noted in their responses. This, coupled with the tumultuous year, led to an all-time high-stress level. With school closures, world conflicts, and demanding courses, our seniors dealt with (and overcame) a lot of stress.

"Special"

Although the year had its downsides, it was still special. Seniors will soon say goodbye to their high school and enter their future. Senior year is a year that will always be remembered, regardless of the difficulty it brought. Seniors made it through high school and now begin an exciting new chapter in their lives!

The Cliffside Park Courier wishes the senior class a safe summer and a heartfelt congratulations! Below are some of the other answers to the poll:
