The Life and Legacy of Soccer Player Diego Maradona
Diego Maradona, considered by many to be the greatest soccer player of all time, passed away on November 25th, leaving behind a memorable legacy. Born October 26th, 1960, Diego Maradona spent his childhood in the poverty-stricken neighborhood of Villa Fiorito, Argentina. It was evident, even at a young age, that Maradona was a soccer prodigy, winning several league championships and developing an impressive record. Argentina won its second World Cup in 1986, in which Maradona scored 5 goals throughout. A goal in the World Cup scored with his hand was named “Mano de Dios” or “Hand of God”, making many believe that Maradona’s talent was a blessing from God. Maradona’s incredible talent made him one of the most expensive players in the league and he amassed a fortune during his career. However, his luxurious lifestyle, a divorce, and a serious drug and alcohol addiction cost him a great portion of his wealth.
Maradona’s drug and alcohol addiction worsened in 2004, as he developed several health conditions that eventually put an end to his career. Maradona then moved on to spend his time as a coach, training professional soccer players. His story of going from rags to riches brought a sense of pride to the Argentinean people who viewed him as a role model and mourned his loss deeply. A crowd of people spanning over a kilometer long took to the streets following his death to catch a glimpse of his coffin. Unfortunately, police clashed with crowds due to the fact that few COVID-19 precautions were taken. Officers even used tear gas and rubber bullets against the crowd during the solemn gathering to mourn the passing of the Argentinean hero.
Maradona’s cause of death was reported to be cardiac arrest. Prior to his passing, Maradona underwent several surgeries as a result of life-threatening heart and blood related issues, namely a blood clot that damaged his brain one month before he passed.
Investigations into the nature of Maradona’s death are underway, as Maradona’s family speculates that he was not provided the proper treatment in his vulnerable state. Despite that, Maradona will continue to exist as a household name in Argentina and beyond, remembered amongst soccer fanatics due to his immense talent.
