What Happens Now That Queen Elizabeth Is Dead?
On September 8th,2022, Operation London Bridge announced the death of the longest reigning monarch of Britain, Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of ninety-six. She lived through many major world events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, 9/11, the Vietnam War, and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Welcoming a new monarch will be something different for England. With a new king, other changes will be occurring as well. What can be expected after the death of Queen Elizabeth II? What will the crowning of King Charles III bring about?
The most noticeable change following the queen’s death is new currency. According to CGTN, “New coins will feature Charles facing to the left, the opposite profile of his mother Elizabeth II.” Also, new bank notes with the king’s face will be distributed as well. This change will occur slowly, as making new banknotes and coins takes time.
There will also be changes to the country’s national anthem. According to CBS News, the name of the national anthem will be changed from “God Save the Queen” to “God Save the King.” Words in the anthem referencing the queen will be replaced, such as the pronouns “she/her.”
The Royal Standard flag could also be getting changed. According to Royal.UK, “The Royal Standard represents the Sovereign and the United Kingdom.” The current Royal Standard Flag is only representing the countries of England as three lion passants, Scotland as one rampant lion, and Ireland as a harp (CBS News). Since King Charles has been the Prince of Wales for some time, he might change the Royal Standard flag to represent Wales in some way.
The passing of the Queen brings about many changes for Great Britain. Time will tell how these changes affect the country and its people.
